Moravia-Silesia is the far eastern end of our Czech coverage — Ostrava sits about 2,100 km from our Barcelona hub, with LTL groupage departing on Monday and Friday as a rule and transit by delivery zone. It is also a region in the middle of a genuine industrial transition, and describing it the way it looked ten years ago would misprice it.
The automotive base is what holds up. Hyundai's Nošovice plant built 330,890 vehicles in 2024 and 276,175 in 2025, a fall of about 16.5%, with the Tucson at 76% of output; the site carries a stated capacity of 350,000 a year, nearly 2,900 employees and EUR 2.05 billion of investment, and passed its five-millionth vehicle in 2025. A Hyundai Mobis battery-system plant has run inside the same site since August 2025, making 360,000 systems a year with expansion to 450,000 planned. Around it sit Brose at Kopřivnice with around 2,000 people on seating systems, Continental's ContiTech hose plant at Ostrava-Hrabová, and Schaeffler Motion Technologies at Ostrava-Hrušov.
Heavy industry is the part that has changed, and two facts are worth stating plainly. Ostrava is no longer an integrated steelworks: NOVÁ HUŤ s.r.o. took the Ostrava-Kunčice plant over from the insolvency administrator on 30 September 2025 and runs the rolling mills only, with the blast furnaces, steel shop and coke plant cold. And 2025 was the last full year of black coal mining in the Czech Republic, with OKD delivering 1.49 million tonnes before decommissioning began. Czech crude steel output now stands at roughly 2.4 million tonnes a year — the lowest in the country's history and more than half below its earlier level — of which Třinecké železárny at Třinec makes 2,424 kt, effectively all of it.
The road network is the constraint a shipper feels. Only 128.0 km of the region's 3,489.4 km of roads are motorway — 3.7% — and coverage is uneven district by district, from 48.5 km in Nový Jičín down to 13.1 km in Karviná. The D48 corridor from Bělotín, where it meets the D1, through Nový Jičín and Frýdek-Místek to the Polish border is still not continuous to motorway standard: the Bělotín-Rybí section near Nový Jičín remains unbuilt, and the existing I/48 between Bělotín and Rychaltice is 34 km of four-lane road laid down between 1970 and 1987 with no central reservation and no hard shoulder.

The route into Moravia-Silesia clears La Jonquera, crosses France, Germany and Austria or Bavaria and enters the Czech Republic to reach Ostrava at roughly 2,100 km from our Barcelona hub — the longest Czech leg we run. The final approach uses the D1 to Bělotín and then the D48 east, and that last stretch is the one to plan around: it is not motorway for its whole length, and the I/48 substitute between Bělotín and Rychaltice is a 1970s four-lane road with no central reservation and no hard shoulder, which is a different driving proposition from the D1. The region's industrial estates are where most of our freight actually lands — Ostrava-Hrabová across about 115 hectares with more than 9,400 jobs created, and Ostrava-Mošnov with nearly 4,300 jobs and CZK 15.7 billion invested, hosting MAHLE Behr, PLAKOR CZECH and CROMODORA WHEELS. One thing not to look for here: the Czech statistical office publishes no regional dimension in its foreign-trade data, so there is no Moravia-Silesia-Spain figure, and any number presented as one is a national figure wearing a regional label.
