Exporting Spanish ceramic tiles and building materials by road
Ceramic tiles and building materials are heavy, dense, palletised cargo, and that changes almost everything about how you ship them. Where most freight is priced on the space it blocks, tile pallets hit the truck's weight limit long before they run out of room. This guide is the freight playbook for exporting out of the Castellon ceramic cluster and eastern Spain: how dense cargo is priced, when a full load beats groupage, how to protect fragile units against breakage, and which EU lanes move customs-free on a CMR alone.

The Castellon tile cluster and what it ships
Spain is one of the European Union's largest exporters of ceramic tiles, and the great majority of that output comes from a single dense cluster in the province of Castellon — Onda, Vila-real, l'Alcora and Nules, with l'Alcora at its historic centre. A factory in this triangle sits within a short drive of the Mediterranean port belt and the AP-7 motorway spine, which makes road freight the natural mode for most intra-EU tile movements.
The cargo itself is unusually consistent: porcelain and ceramic floor and wall tiles, large-format slabs, mosaics, and the building materials that travel alongside them — adhesives, grouts, mortars, natural and engineered stone, sanitaryware and fixtures. Almost all of it ships boxed on pallets, and almost all of it is dense. That single property — high weight packed into a small footprint — is what drives the freight decisions in the rest of this guide.
Dense cargo is weight-driven, not volume-driven
Most road freight is priced on the greater of two figures: the load's actual scale weight and its volumetric weight, where the common European factor treats one cubic metre as about 333 kg. Light, bulky freight — foam, packaging, furniture — is billed on volume because it runs out of space first. Tiles do the opposite. They are far denser than 333 kg per cubic metre, so their actual weight is always the governing figure, and you are paying for kilograms rather than for air.
Worked example, indicative only: a single pallet of porcelain floor tiles, footprint 1.2 by 0.8 metres and built only about one metre high, can easily weigh 900 to 1,200 kg. Its volume is roughly one cubic metre, which converts to about 333 kg of volumetric weight — but the scale shows three to four times that. The chargeable weight is the real weight every time. The practical consequence is that the usual lever for cutting freight cost — squeezing out wasted space — barely moves the needle on tiles. There is little air to remove. What matters instead is how much total weight you put on the truck and how it is distributed, which is the subject of the next section.
Why weight, not volume, fills the trailer
A standard semi-trailer offers about 13.6 loading metres of floor and, as an indicative figure, 24 to 25 tonnes of usable payload under the typical 40-tonne gross-combination limit in most EU countries. For general cargo the floor fills first. For tiles the payload ceiling is reached first, and often dramatically so.
Do the arithmetic: if a tile pallet weighs around 1,000 kg, roughly 24 to 25 of them exhaust the payload. Those 24 pallets occupy only about half the trailer's floor by length — the deck still looks half empty when the truck is already legally full. You cannot keep loading to fill the visible space, because the limit you have hit is weight, not room.
Axle limits tighten this further. A trailer is not just capped on total gross weight; each axle group has its own limit, so a dense load has to be spread along the deck rather than concentrated over a few pallets. Heavy tile pallets stacked into one half of the trailer can overload an axle even when the gross weight is legal. This is why tile loading is planned by weight distribution, not by floor coverage, and why a written quote for tiles is built around tonnage and pallet count rather than loading metres.
Full load or groupage: the tile decision
When a full load is the right call
Because tiles hit the payload ceiling at around 24 to 25 standard pallets, that is roughly the point at which a dedicated full truckload makes sense. If your consignment is approaching a full trailer's worth of weight, you are effectively paying for the whole vehicle anyway, so a direct full load is usually both cheaper per tonne and faster — one pickup, one delivery, no transit hub, less handling and therefore less breakage exposure.
Full loads also suit regular, scheduled volume. A tile exporter shipping pallets to the same distribution point each week is a textbook full-load or near-full-load lane, and steady, scheduled departures keep the rate stable.
When LTL groupage wins
Below roughly half a trailer, groupage — less-than-truckload — is usually the better economics. You pay for the share of the truck your pallets actually use and split the rest of the cost with other shippers' freight on the same scheduled run. For a handful of tile pallets to Germany or Italy, that is far cheaper than commissioning a whole vehicle.
The catch for tiles is the weight share. On LTL, a carrier prices the most limiting of loading metres, actual weight and volumetric weight — and for tiles the actual weight dominates, so a few heavy pallets can carry a larger share of the truck than their modest floor footprint suggests. That is expected and correct: you are buying payload, not floor. Protecting tiles against breakage
Tiles are heavy and brittle, which is the worst combination for transit damage: there is a lot of mass to move and very little tolerance for impact or flex. The single biggest predictor of damage-free delivery is how the pallet is built, not how carefully the truck is driven. Most breakage is built into the pallet at the factory, not created on the road.
Build the unit to carry its own weight. Tiles should sit square on a sound pallet with no overhang past the edges, banded down with strong strapping over edge protectors so the bands cannot bite into the cartons or shift the load. Corner and edge protection matters because the strapping tension concentrates exactly where ceramic is most vulnerable to chipping. Stretch-wrap should be tight enough that the stack cannot rock, but the strapping — not the film — is what holds a dense tile pallet together.
Do not over-stack fragile or heavy units. Tile pallets are heavy enough that placing one on top of another can crush the cartons below, even though the goods themselves are hard, so most tile pallets travel single-tier. If a pallet genuinely cannot take a loaded pallet on top, declare it non-stackable — honestly. Marking a load stackable when it is not invites exactly the crushing damage you are trying to avoid; marking it non-stackable when it could safely take weight wastes payload you have paid for. The lanes out of Castellon and eastern Spain
The natural destinations for Spanish tiles track the main EU construction and renovation markets: France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland are the workhorse lanes, with the Spain-to-Italy corridor especially relevant given northern Italy's own building and design trade. From the Castellon cluster the truck picks up the AP-7 north toward La Jonquera for France-bound and onward freight, or routes inland for central-European destinations.
Every one of these lanes is intra-EU, which removes the single biggest source of cross-border friction. There is no customs border inside the single market: no export declaration on the Spanish side, no import entry at destination, no duty and no transit guarantee to arrange. The paperwork is the CMR consignment note, the commercial invoice and the packing list — that is it. The complexity that exists is operational, not customs: weight planning, scheduled departures, and the driving and emissions rules of the destination country.
Capacity on these lanes runs at 350+ trucks per month across owned and partner carriers, on a scheduled cadence rather than an everyday service. For a tile exporter that means a predictable weekly or several-times-weekly slot on the main corridors, which is exactly what a regular palletised flow needs.
Pricing your tile shipment: a worked example
Suppose you have 12 pallets of porcelain tiles bound for northern Italy, each pallet 1.2 by 0.8 metres, built about one metre high, weighing 1,000 kg — 12,000 kg in total. On the floor those pallets occupy only about 4.8 loading metres of a 13.6-metre trailer, around a third of the deck. But at 12 tonnes you are already at roughly half the usable payload of a single truck. These figures are indicative and meant to illustrate the weight-versus-floor trade-off.
That profile sits squarely in groupage territory: well under a full load by both floor and weight, but weight-heavy enough that the price reflects payload rather than floor space. Quick reference before you book
Weigh and measure honestly. Tiles are billed on actual weight, so an accurate weight per pallet and total tonnage is what produces an accurate quote — guessing low helps no one and can leave a load illegal on the axles.
Decide full load versus groupage by weight. Approaching a full trailer's payload — roughly 24 to 25 standard tile pallets, or about 24 tonnes — points to a dedicated load. Below about half that, scheduled LTL groupage is usually cheaper.
Build and declare the pallet correctly. Square to the footprint, strapped over edge protectors, single-tier where the goods cannot take weight on top, and stackability declared as it truly is. This is the main lever you control over breakage.
