Volkswagen Slovakia dominates the freight picture. Its Bratislava plant built 336,905 vehicles in 2025 and 341,111 in 2024, employs around 11,400 people across a 2,100,000 m2 site, and is unusual in building eight series models for four Volkswagen Group brands on one site — the Touareg, the Audi Q7 and Q8 and the Porsche Cayenne among them. Exports ran to EUR 12.4 billion in 2024, 61% of the vehicles to Europe, 16% to the United States and 12% to China. The inbound side matters more for us: the plant bought EUR 3 billion of production material inside Slovakia in 2024, 29% of its total, with Germany the largest single source at 31%.
SLOVNAFT is the second anchor, processing 4.8 million tonnes of crude at Vlcie hrdlo in 2024 with 2,181 employees under full MOL ownership. Its output is 52% diesel and 22% petrol, with 6% primary plastics — that last share is what puts polymer freight on this lane. Across the region, industrial enterprises recorded EUR 51.7 billion of revenue in 2023 and employed more than 86,000 people, the highest industrial headcount of any Slovak region.
One claim about this region should be handled carefully. It is comfortably Slovakia's richest region, but it is often promoted as one of the wealthiest in the European Union outright, and the ranking does not support that: at 151% of the EU27 average in purchasing power standards in 2023 it sits around nineteenth of 244 EU NUTS-2 regions. Prosperous and well above average, but not top-five.

The route into the Bratislava Region clears La Jonquera, crosses France and Germany and enters Slovakia after Austria, reaching Bratislava at about 1,950 km from our Barcelona hub on two weekly departures. The region's compactness is the operational advantage: with 136 km of motorway inside 852 km of total road network, a deconsolidated trailer reaches most delivery addresses without long runs on secondary roads, which is not true of the Slovak regions further east. The Danube runs 37 km through the region and forms part of the border with Austria and Hungary; the port of Bratislava handled 1,633,986 tonnes of inland waterway freight in 2022, almost all of it loaded rather than unloaded, and the state company Verejne pristavy owns the land and quay edges. Air freight is small but moving fast — M. R. Stefanik Airport handled 13,871 tonnes in the first nine months of 2025, up 68% year on year. Neither mode displaces the road for what we carry: our freight arrives by truck and is deconsolidated for last-mile delivery across the four districts.
