voestalpine at Linz is the industrial centre of gravity: the Steel Division reported EUR 5,799.1 million of revenue and runs one of the group's two integrated iron-and-steel works in Austria. It is also mid-transformation. A green-electricity electric arc furnace is under construction at Linz, scheduled for commissioning in the first half of 2027, which at full operation is to produce around 1.6 million tonnes of CO2-reduced steel a year; phase one of the programme replaces two coal-fired blast furnaces, one at Linz and one at Donawitz. More than 500 suppliers were contracted for the project, which is itself a freight event.
BMW's Steyr plant is the group's largest engine plant anywhere, building around 1.2 million engines in 2025 on EUR 4.45 billion of revenue, up 2% on the year, and accounting for more than a quarter of the Austrian vehicle industry's production volume. It made around 8,500 electric drive units in 2025 and moved e-drive production to two shifts in July 2026, lifting capacity above 4,000 e-motors a week. In the same city, Steyr Automotive — the former MAN truck plant, renamed in 2021 — employs about 1,000 people building refuse-collection and street-cleaning vehicles and doing contract manufacturing.
Two corrections are worth carrying. Borealis no longer runs a fertiliser business at Linz: it sold the nitrogen business, including the Linz production plants, to AGROFERT in 2023, and its own Linz page now describes an innovation and commercial site with around 460 employees. And KTM, at Mattighofen, is described by its owner as a leading manufacturer of powered two-wheelers rather than Europe's largest motorcycle maker — the stronger phrasing is not the company's own.

Containers grew as bulk fell. AMAG at Ranshofen, in Braunau am Inn, shipped 417,600 tonnes in 2025 on EUR 1,478.5 million of revenue, running recycling, casting and both hot and cold rolling on one site, which makes it a substantial generator of both inbound scrap and outbound rolled aluminium. The one scheduling factor to keep in view over the next few years is the voestalpine conversion at Linz: an electric arc furnace commissioning in the first half of 2027, with more than 500 contracted suppliers feeding the project, will change what moves in and out of that site well before it changes what the site produces.
