Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote: EU customs territory, but outside the VAT area, with a long sea leg.
The Canaries are a case apart and it is worth saying so first: they form part of the EU customs territory but sit outside the VAT territory. IGIC applies there rather than VAT, which is why every movement between the islands and the mainland requires a declaration (DUA) even though you never leave Spain.
The other constraint is the sea. There is no road connection: freight is shipped from Cádiz, Huelva or Algeciras and the crossing is counted in days, not hours. Any lead time that omits that call is miscalculated.
Our operation is built on the Spain–Europe land corridor, and from Las Palmas our record is token. We say so here so nobody plans a campaign on capacity we have not proven.
Is a declaration needed to ship from the Canaries to the mainland?
Yes. Although it is Spanish and EU customs territory, the Canaries sit outside the VAT territory, so the movement is documented with a DUA and IGIC is settled on the island side. It is not a third-country border, but it is real paperwork to plan for.
Can you move freight from Gran Canaria to Europe?
It can be arranged by combining a vessel with our land network, though it is not where we have most mileage. Raise it early and we will tell you frankly what lead time we can hold and at what cost, before you commit the freight.
