Lower Silesia is Poland's fourth-largest regional economy — 282,957 million PLN of GDP in 2023, 8.3% of the national total, behind only the Warsaw capital region, Śląskie and Wielkopolskie — and it is markedly more industrial than the country as a whole. The automotive base here is powertrain, not assembly, and it is worth naming the plants precisely because they are routinely misplaced. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland runs two Lower Silesian plants and neither is in Wrocław: Wałbrzych built 801,000 units in 2025 — 251,000 petrol engines, 59,000 manual gearboxes and 491,000 e-CVT hybrid transmissions — with 1,847 people, while Jelcz-Laskowice built 343,000 TNGA petrol engines with 993. Together 1,144,000 powertrain components on cumulative investment of 7.03 billion PLN. Mercedes-Benz at Jawor, inside the Wałbrzych special economic zone about 70 km west of Wrocław, passed its one-millionth four-cylinder engine in January 2024 and is the company's only engine plant in Europe outside Germany.
Two things frequently said about this region are no longer true. Volvo does not build here: AB Volvo closed the Wrocław bodybuilding plant in the first quarter of 2024, around 1,500 jobs, and has been chassis-only in Europe since. And Wrocław Airport's cargo is far smaller than usually quoted — the operator's own table shows 11,786 tonnes in 2025 rather than the ~25,000 that circulates, and roughly 80% of it is trucked in as road feeder service rather than flown. Air is not a channel on this lane.
What is genuinely large is copper and batteries. KGHM extracted 30.6 million tonnes of ore in 2024 and smelted 570,900 tonnes of electrolytic copper in 2025, with the Głogów smelter rated around 475,000 tonnes a year and Legnica a further 122,000. LG Energy Solution's battery complex at Biskupice Podgórne outside Wrocław runs 28 buildings across 107 hectares with a stated 86 GWh of annual capacity.

The route into Lower Silesia clears La Jonquera, crosses France and Germany and enters Poland on the A4 corridor, putting Wrocław about 2,100 km from our Barcelona hub. Deconsolidation has a real rail alternative nearby: PCC Intermodal's Brzeg Dolny terminal, some 30 km north-west of the city, has operated since 2005 with about 150,000 TEU of annual handling capacity across 9 hectares, two 650-metre loading tracks and remotely controlled cranes in service since 2024, while the Kąty Wrocławskie container terminal links the battery complex to Gdańsk. The three special economic zones are what actually shape the delivery map — Wałbrzych INVEST-PARK reports 48 billion PLN invested across 450 investors and more than 90,000 jobs since 1997, Legnica over 12 billion PLN and 20,000 employees across 18 subzones, and Kamienna Góra covers 63 gminas including Jelenia Góra. Poland's driving ban works on a different threshold from Germany's or Italy's: it catches vehicles and combinations over 12 tonnes rather than 7.5, applies on listed public holidays 08:00-22:00, from 18:00 the evening before some of them, and across the school summer holidays, with a broad exemption list covering perishable foodstuffs, medicines, fuels and live animals. Tolling is the state e-TOLL system, which starts at 3.5 tonnes and covers roughly 5,870 km of motorways, expressways and selected national roads, with rates reset on 1 January 2026 by weight and Euro class.
